"The lad himself - a flawed genius
Tony Hancock was one of Britain’s best-loved comedians, in fact he still is, but he committed suicide in Sidney, Australia. Many clowns are sad figures, but what drove him to take his own life? This piece is tragic, funny and moving. Harold Pinter describes it as “the perfect play”.
The title of the play comes from his radio and TV version of Hancock’s Half Hour that chronicled the miseries and misadventures of a rarely employed comedian and his rather odd friends. At one point 20 million people tuned in to listen to this program every Sunday afternoon. And when it transferred to TV it also enjoyed huge success.
Danish national treasures like Dirk Passer or Victor Borge are probably the closest I can think of to compare with Tony Hancock and the loss felt by his audience. They identified with his humour and loved him for it.
Fleksnes – a Norwegian translation with Rolv Wesenlund playing Hancock. Apparently one of Norway’s most successful ever TV series."
