A special event has been arranged for members to see the premiere of an English theatre production:
"The Road to Mecca" by Athol Fugard
- a South African Tale of courage and love.
Nobody likes to be labelled as different from the social norm especially when there are undertones of gender, racial and cultural intolerance. Athol Fugard's play depicts the true life story of reclusive Miss Helen. After the death of her husband, at the age of around 50, Miss Helen became a sculptor, creating in her garden an extensive world of assorted figures, her own Mecca, as she called it.
An "outsider artist", Miss Helen represents someone seen as a threat to and excluded from the tight society in which she has lived all her life, when her only "crime" is that she dares to be herself. She asks nothing of anyone and only wants to be accepted for being the unique artictis individual she really is. Instead she is faced with misunderstanding, bullying and the constant pressure to fir in with the norm.
In this play, set in 1974 in the Karoo region of South Africa, Fugard delves brilliantly into issues of ageing, personal freedom and individuality, human worth, loneliness, trust and friendship.
The cast are British actors: Nathalie Johnston, Sue Hansen-Styles and Tony Wedgewood.
