The situation in the Middle East
25.02.2011 Foreign Policy Spokesman Social Democratic Party
Mogens Lykketoft is a member of the Danish Parliament for the Social Democratic Party and 1st Vice-President of the parliament. He has served as Minister of Finance in Jan 1993 - Dec 2000, Minister for Foreign Affairs in Dec 2000 - Nov 2001, was a former Chairman of his party in 2002 - 2005 and has been Foreign Policy spokesman since 2005.
He was part of the Social Democrat-led governments that renovated and implemented the system known as flexicurity (flexibility and social security), blending strong Scandinavian unemployment benefits with a more lax regulation of employment, making it easier for employers to hire and fire people in order to encourage economic growth and reduce unemployment. This policy has proven extremely successful at reducing unemployment, and it has been proposed as a plausible model for other European countries.
Mogens Lykketoft is married to Mette Holm, a journalist and author, who covers China and East Asia. He has two daughters and five grandchildren - all of them boys.
