Niels Hulgaard was the top scorer in the whole of Denmark in the 'Studentereksamen' in 2010. He has high goals – to do something about man's impact on the global environment. As a step on the way he has gained a place to study engineering, economics and management at Wadham College, Oxford. The BCCD was so impressed by his application that he is the first undergraduate ever to be awarded their scholarship of 50,000DKK to help cover his first year's costs.
At St Annæ Gymnasium he was chairman of the student council. He also represented Denmark in the International Geography Olympiad in 2010 in Taiwan and in the EU Science Olympiad in 2008 in Cyprus. With this experience he believes that with English as the global language it is important to be educated in English if he is to affect the global level of sustainability and harmony with nature.

The award was presented at BCCD-BIU's September lunch meeting, where Dr Lars Bangert Struwe spoke about "Denmark's anti-piracy operations and the lack of policing in global commerce"
Dr Lars Bangert Struwe from the Centre for Military Studies at the University of Copenhagen spoke to the BCCD about Denmark's anti-piracy operations. He began by emphasising that the piracy off Africa's coast today is completely unlike the romantic myths. The audience were left in little doubt about the size of the dilemmas facing individuals, commercial organisations and the international community.
