Undeterred by the last minute cancellation of this event in April, over 100 people signed up to hear what Sir David Walker had to say about corporate governance, and how he would explain the recommendations in his famous report (Walker Review 2009) conducted on behalf of the UK government. This time there was no ash, and Sir David managed to dodge the airline strikes to arrive in 'one of his favourite countries'.

Finansrådet hosted the event, providing an efficient and welcoming backdrop for attendees to absorb and question the insights offered. Nordic Capital Markets Forum, Copenhagen Business School, and BCCD-BIU jointly arranged the format to balance the information on the UK picture, against the unfolding Danish developments explained by Sten Scheibye, Chairman of the Danish Committee for Corporate Governance.
Sir David managing to make corporate governance sound interesting!
Sir David interspersed his argument with jokes and anecdotes to clearly make his points that:
-
boards today have so much power to impact society that it is crucial that board members are competent, well-informed, and dedicated to their work.
-
it is important that the ultimate owners of companies (i.e. shareholders) engage with boards and challenge poor management
-
Quantitative Impact Assessments should be made before implementing new legislation, to minimise unintended negative consequences

Sten Scheibye, Chairman of the Danish Committee for Corporate Governance then explained what has been happenning in Denmark, and described the new Danish recommendations for good Corporate Governance. He talked about the 'soft law' concept of 'comply or explain' and the process that led to generating the new recommendations.
