BCCD-BIU and Expat in Denmark members were privileged to have the opportunity to hear Director, Lone Scherfig introduce her new film 'An Education'. The film has received high international acclaim and tells the story of a schoolgirl in 60's London who has her eyes dramatically opened to the choices, possibilities and reality before her as she turns 17.

Over 50 BCCD members and guests listened as Lone spoke of the challenge of conveying the lightness of a Nick Hornby script, and the importance of understanding the culture of Britain in the early '60's - a time when The Beatles were playing, but were not yet world stars and London was not exactly 'swinging'. She described how wonderful it had been to work with Carey Mulligan (who stars as Jenny) and see her grow into a fully fledged filmstar.

Lone was thrilled when the film was oscar nominated, and said that they had partied so much then, that it was barely a dissapointment not to actually win! The excitement continued when she recieved an email saying that Sir Paul McCartney had bought a ticket to see the film, and heightened again when another message came through saying the two films that HM Queen Elizabeth had ordered to see on Christmas Day with her family were 'An Education' and 'New Moon'!

As the closing credits rolled, the sound of applause filled the cinema. The usual bustle of finding belongings and rushing out to the fresh air was replaced by the mellow contentment of reflection on an evening well spent. This film more than lives up to the hype, and this event will be remembered as a special evening.
The Copenhagen Post has also run an article on this event.
