| Queen Mary 2, Plaque & Keys Ceremony in Helsingør | Print |
Cunard's Queen Mary 2 cruise ship made her first visit to Denmark on 11th May 2010, and is shown here anchored at Helsingør. Gareth Garvey (BCCD-BIU Board member) and Penny Schmith (BCCD Executive Director) were invited by Mærsk Broker Agency to represent BCCD-BIU at the reception and plaques and keys ceremony that was held to mark the occasion.
The Queen Mary 2 is an impressive 1132ft long (345m) and weighs almost 80 000tonnes when fully loaded. The ship has pod driven propellers instead of the conventional shaft driven ones, which are arranged to give very high maneuverability - the Queen Mary 2 can turn around within it's own length! The bridge is the navigation and safety hub of the ship and is manned 24 hours per day, split between 3 watches.

The visit included a tour of the ship, including the bridge, and was followed by a lunch for all the guests.
The plaques and keys ceremony was then performed by Johannes Hecht-Nielsen, Mayor of Helsingør and Commodore Bernard Warner.
