Dear Members and contacts,

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2010.  The start of the year has been very busy, with a series of extrememly well-attended events through January and February.  The spring calendar is shaping up well, with some very interesting lunch speakers confirmed (see below).  There are also several 'on the way home' events, that we are hoping to add to the mix - we will let you know more details once they are confirmed.

Dates for the diary:

  • Lunch on Friday 19 March - Shanelle Hall, Director - Supply Division, UNICEF, will be speaking on 'Millenium Development Goals'
  • Corporate event on Thursday 15 April - Sir David Walker, Morgan Stanley International, will be speaking on Corporate Governance for the UK Banking Industry.  This will be an on the way home event at Finansrådet, held jointly with CBS and Nordic Capitals Markets Forum.
  • Film Premiere of BAFTA award winning 'An Education' (directed by Lone Scherfig) will be held at Grand Teatret in early April
  • April Lunch on Friday 23 (date tbc) - Major Filip Ejby, speaking on "UK/DK military cooperation in Afghanistan"
  • Lunch & Annual General Meeting on Friday 21 May - Ambassador Birger Riis-Jørgensen
  • Hamlet's Birthday Brunch on Sunday 6th June, at Kronborg Castle

Further details of these and other events can be seen on our website as they become available.

Upcoming COBCOE events:

On 23rd March, the COBCOE Gala Dinner and Chamber of the Year Awards will take place in the beautiful setting of the Royal Automobile Club.  Traditionally the Gala Dinner guest speakers have been inspirational business leaders or public figures and given the challenges posed by the current global financial turmoil, this year is no exception. We are pleased to announce the gala dinner guest speaker is Lord Michael Hastings CBE, KPMG’s Global Head of Citizenship and Diversity. He was previously the BBC’s first Head of Corporate Social Responsibility. Michael is a non-executive Director of British Telecom (on the Board for Responsible and Sustainable Business) and a Trustee of the Vodafone Group Foundation. He represents KPMG International on the Global Corporate Citizenship International Committee of the World Economic Forum and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development. In 2009 he became a Member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on Diversity and Talent.

On 14th April, COBCOE together with the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium is running a very special conference in Brussels entitled: “Britain and the EU: Odd man out – or odd man in”. Our key speaker will be Sir Stephen Wall GCMG LVO, Vice Chair, Business for Europe. His presentation will be followed by a discussion by a distinguished panel. Attendance is free of charge.

Conference Programme Registration

On 22nd / 23rd April, we will be taking a COBCOE delegation to visit the International Organisations in Geneva. Although quite expensive, this will be a unique insight into how those institutions work with personal contacts at the highest levels. A flyer and a programme are also attached.

From the Secretariat:

We would like to remind you that if you have signed up for an event, for yourself or a guest, and need to cancel, then please let us know the day before in order to avoid any charge that we may have to pass on to you.

The problems some people have had with using the sign-up form for events on the website appear to have been solved!  So please try using the sign up form from now on.  If you know there have been problems in the past then please also send us an email the first time you use the sign up form again, so we can confirm the system works. This mainly applies to those with ".mail.dk" or ".tele.dk" addresses.

We have decided to add photographs to our members list on the extranet, to make it easier for new members to get know everyone.  So if you attend an event in the next few months, then don't be surprised if Hugh Mayo asks to take your picture!  Alternatively you are welcome to send in an image, 100 x 100 pixels.

Finally, we would like to revive the 'business news' section of our website.  So if any business members have news that would be of interest, then please send us some text (and images) that we can use.

As always, you are welcome to just phone or e-mail the secretariat directly.

Kind regards,

Penny Schmith
Executive Director
